Sexual Identity
With the advancement of civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender peoples, it is erroneously thought that these individuals no longer have problems related to acceptance and discrimination. This is not the case as many people still do not believe that sexual identity is biological but believe it to be a choice.
Coping With Discrimination
Teenagers and young adults still suffer guilt from not living up to what they may believe or their parents’ expectations of them. Adults who grew up when there was active institutional discrimination against them have difficulty adjusting to the new social environment. In addition, there is still active bullying and discrimination against the LGBT community, and this fuels feelings of inadequacy, self-hatred, and other negative consequences in a number of individuals.
Gain Self-Acceptance for LGBT People
Psychotherapy can facilitate self-acceptance and greater self-esteem in LGBT individuals, thereby enabling them to live more satisfying and happier lives.
